Temporal variation of forest in salinity, ph and contents of nitrate and heavy metals in soils of Falgore Game Reserve of Kano, Nigeria

K. I. Omanam

Abstract

A study was carried out to assess the seasonal variation in pH and heavy metals concentration in soils of Falgore Game Reserve of Kano, Nigeria during the year 2020. The soil samples were collected from the tube 20 selected areas in Falgore Game Reserve of Kano, Nigeria during May and October, 2020. Results indicated that salinity of soil samples in terms of total soluble salts (EC)was in the range of 0.13 -1.25 and 0.11 -1.14 dS m-1 in May and October, respectively. Nitrate-nitrogen in soil samples during May and October ranged from 8.90 to 24.17 mg kg-1 and 4.9 to 15.3 mg kg-1 with mean value of 15.7 and 8.7 mg kg-1 and fluoride concentration ranged from 0.83 to 2.03 mg kg-1 and 0.68 to 1.83 mg kg-1 with mean values of 1.24 and 1.33 mg kg-1, respectively. The heavy metals, (Cu, Zn, Cd) in soil samples ranged from 0.68 to 2.35, 1.26 to 3.03, and 0.01 to 0.07 mg kg-1, respectively with mean values of 1.55, 1.13, and 0.04 mg kg-1 in May and 1.30, 1.55, and 0.03 mg kg-1 in October. The lower values of salinity, nitrate, and heavy metals in soils during October indicated the effect of rainfall.
